Venezuela
Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe arrived in Venezuela’s Margarita Island on Thursday for the Non-Aligned Summit. In the 120-nation summit, the presidents are expected to offer their solidarity to President Nicolas Maduro’s socialist government although the event could reportedly expose his international isolation.
And in its vast declaration draft, the movement is urging for U.N. reforms and an end to the U.S. embargo on Cuba. The draft also condemns Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, Washington’s policy on Syria and western sanctions on Zimbabwe.
It could be a poor turn out though, as only the leaders from Zimbabwe, Iran, Cuba, Bolivia and Ecuador are currently thought to be attending.
The Non-Aligned Movement was founded in 1961 to provide an alternative for nations which did not back either the United States or Soviet Union during the Cold War. But its relevance has declined since the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall.
